Hidden on the Ethiopian highlands, in the province of Lasta, lies an incredible sanctuary, the holiest place of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church: Lalibela. In the heart of the sacred city there are twelve beautiful churches carved in the mountains. They are the most important group of Ethiopian medieval monuments, twelve splendid monoliths in pink tuff. Wonderful images and scenery reveal the architecture and rites of a religious fervour little known in the western world.
