The film reports the attempt made in winter by three Italian mushers, on sledges drawn by dogs, to cross the Rocky Mountain system of Brooks Range and the North Slope plain to the oil base in Prudhoe Bay, the northernmost point of Alaska. Following the expedition, the RAI cameras entered Arctic Gates, the great national park, for the first time and recorded the fascinating and wild beauty of a mountain chain, which is still almost entirely intact and unexplored.
