In 1970, an avalanche of water and rocks that fell from the glacier above destroyed the town of Yungay in Perù, built at the foot of Mt. Huascaran. 20,000 people lost their lives in the disaster, adding to the long list of deaths caused by landslides and avalanches in the Cordillera Occidental. The glaciologist Bernard Francou, who has lived in La Paz for 5 years, monitoring the great glaciers of the Andes Mountains which are rapidly withdrawing due to changes in the climate.
