The fiords of the eastern coastline of Greenland are a paradise for scientists because they are uninhabited. Only walrus and polar bears live virtually undisturbed in this rich and secret landscape. For some years now this has been the destination of the German «Polarstern» icebreaker. In one of these expeditions lasting two months, geologists and geophysicists from five nations studied the evolution of the arctic climate with sophisticated apparatus, trying to find the answer to various questions about the future of the earth’s climate and the effect of man’s work on variations in the climate.
