Teodors Kirsis and Imants Zauls reached the top of Everest in the first expedition organised by Latvia. They trained for it in the winter, repeatedly scaling church spires and towers, although they had to face altogether different problems in the Himalayas. This is the greatest success achieved by a Latvian expedition since the country regained its independence.
