Jean Christophe Lafaille is one of the top French climbers of the 1990s. In 1992 Pierre Beghin proposed a new route on Annapurna. Jean Christophe’s first adventure at 8,000 metres was highly dramatic. After stopping a climb at 7,400 metres due to bad weather, the sudden breakage of a support caused the fatal fall of his companion Beghin. Thus deprived of the technical material in Beghin’s backpack and with his arm fractured due to a rockfall, Lafaille managed to climb back down the wall and return to base camp. After recovering from the result of the accident, he decided to return to the Himalayas, choosing a 6000 in the Shisha Pangma area for a solo climb.
