In the First World War the Montozzo-Tonale front line ran along the mountain peaks of upper Val di Sole. The large and small valleys were dotted with wooden huts, trenches, galleries and cannon emplacements, fences and forts. A lot of these have been destroyed or taken away, but there are still many rusty remains scattered here and there, evidence of brutal battles and human sacrifice. Walking on these mountains and among these stones, the visitor's shadow streches before him as he reflection this sad evidence of "nonsense".
