Perduto nella vastità himalayana, a nord est nel Dolpo,a metri di altitudine vi è un villaggio abitato da poveri e rudi contadini che insieme a minuscoli campi di orzo hanno come unica e principale ricchezza il sale dell alto tibet che devono estrarre per scambiare ogni anno con il grano predato aldilà delle montagne gigantesche nelle basse e ricche vallate nepalesi. il viaggio per scambiare il sale con il grano è fatto di viaggi avventurosi attraverso sentieri pericolosi dove ogni passo può essere fatale; ad esso partecipano uomini, donne e bambini che accompagnano immense mandrie di yak; viaggi che mettono alla prova il coraggio di tutti e trasforma dei semplici e timidi contadini in eroici carovanieri. Per settimane, per mesi lottano contro il freddo, la violenza del vento, le tempeste di neve, le valanghe, si confrontano con una natura aggressiva ed eccessiva. Il vecchio capo carismatico Tinlè. il cui figlio primogenito è morto da poco, si rifiuta di lasciare il comando della carovana di yak al giovano Karma perchè lo ritiene responsabile della morte di suo figlio. Karma sfida gli oracoli dello sciamano e la collera di Tinlè e prima della data stabilita si pone al comando della carovana seguito dai giovani del villaggio. Nel giorno fissato dagli dei Tinlè, con l'aiuto del suo secondo figlio, il lama Norbou, di suo nipote Passang e dei suoi vecchi compagni, decide malgrado tutto di partire a sua volta. Per l'ennesima volta ricomincia il duello ancestrale fra la montagna e l'uomo. Tinlè e i suoi compagni iniziano un viaggio irto di pericoli che metterà alla prova ognuno di loro e che li trasformerà da semplici contadini in persone capaci di imprese impossibili. Lungo sentieri impraticabili in cui ogni passo può risultare fatale per lunghe settimane sapranno lottare e vincere il freddo, le tempeste di neve, le valanghe e tutte le altre forti sfide che la natura pone loro.

1987- Photo story Honey Hunters is awarded first prize at World Press.
1988- The book Honey Hunters (Nathan Image) is published worldwide.
Shoots his first documentary on Honey Hunters.
Awarded the second prize at World Press for his photo story Children of the Dust.
1990- Publication of the book Shadow Hunters (Nathan Image) with Diane Summers Films a documentary on
Shadow Hunters that earning him an Oscar nomination in the documentary category.
Exhibition in the Cathedral of Images Festival of Arles.
Wins Visa d'Or - Daily Press award at Perpignan for Honey Hunters
Second prize at the World Press for Shadow Hunters First publication in Paris Match
1991- Exhibition of Shadow Hunters: The Nest Gatherers of Tiger Cave at the International Center for

1994- Himalayan Caravans is published by La Martiniere in France and by National Geographic in the United
States.
1997- Directs second unit for the film 7 years in Tibet by Jean-Jacques Annaud.
1998- Publishes of the book Hunting for Honey (Editions de La Martiniere)
Directs the documentary Jungle Nomads, with Debra Kellner.
1999- Directs the movie Himalaya produced by Jacques Perrin. Himalaya earns him an Academy Award
nomination for Best Foreign Film
The book Himalaya (Editions de La Martiniere) accompanies the film.
2001- Exhibits Himalaya, a large format exhibition, on the gates of the Senate at the Luxembourg Gardens in
Paris.
Two books on the Himalayas and the book Jungle Princess by (Editions de La Martiniere) accompany this
retrospective.
2006- Release of his second feature film, The Trail with Gaumont and publishes a book of the same name by
Editions du Chene.
Writes The Sky Will Be My Roof, a memoir of adventure and travel, for Editions Gallimard
