The epic conquest of the Matterhorn on 14 July 1865, by the team headed by the Englishman Edward Whymper, that beat the group guided by the Valdostan Antonio Carrel; the events preceding it, which led to the competition between the two alpinists and the tragic facts that followed it, with the death of four members of Wymper’s team, are one of the best known and frequented pages of literature, films and mountaineering history. The documentary narrates this page using footage (in particular the 1938 ‘Der Berg ruft’ by and with Luis Trenker), period photographs and drawings and journalistic references, as well as the opinion of mountaineering scholars and alpinists.
