The Carnic Alps extend for 100 kilometres towards east from Dobbiaco to Thörl-Maglern. The so-called "Triangle of three nations" (Austria, Italia, Slovenia) marks the eastern border of this chain of calcareous origin. The border between Italy and Austria runs practically along the line of crests. In the documentary the director leaves some protagonists to present a portrait of their region. An Alpine guide, young and old farmers, a mother and a soldier tell, in their Carinzian dialect, the story of their lives and particularities of this lesser known Alpine area. Sports activities and natural features are presented alongside cultural and economic aspects.
Thus we visit the "valley of a hundred mills", but we also learn about the problems, needs and possibilities of the mountain farmers. The documentary then accompanies the children of these remote valleys along exhausting trails to school. Then attention quickly turns to the sad significance the Carnic Alps had in the First World War and also why the region became world famous as a "book illustrating the geological eras".
