When the Italian road network was still impraticable and the transport of animals in large vehiclea was a thing of the future, transhumance was the livestock to suitable grazing lands. In spring and aurumn, large droves of cows, hoses, goats and sheep were herded hundreds of kilometres across the country. Nowadays this practice is less and less used. Manlio is presumably the last herdsman of horses who still follows this ancient pastoral tradition. More than 150 horses spend the winter in the mild climate of the Tevere valley. At the end of May, when the foals are strong enough for the long journey, Manlio, with a group of skilled horsemen, sets out with his horses for the pastures on the Reatini mountains. A long march of two hundred kilometres across uncontaminated lands and busy areas; five gruelling and dangerous days that remind us of the time of cowboys.
