The film alternates with interviews, stories, thoughts and ordinary life scenes in the Yanesha native communities; the story is told directly by the leaders and the simple “comuneros” of the different communities that are visited: the film has no voice-over, is in the original language and sound, with subtitles. The film is divided in two parts. In the first, titled “Anticamente” (In the past), the ancient founder of the Tsachopen community tells us the sad story of the Yanesha people and how they were driven out of their ancestral territories, following the arrival of the white colonists. In the second part of the film, “La vita nella selva” (The life in the forest), we follow Jesus Colina, leader of Nueva Esperanza, and Augusto Frey, leader of Alto Isco, inside the forest. With them we discover on the one hand how strong and complex is the link between the forest and the Yanesha and on the other how this link is being threatened today. The second part of the film, stylistically and visually different from the first, is the live account of the last annual Congress of the federation of the Yanesha native communities, which closes with the election of the new Cornesha (the supreme leader of the Yanesha population) and his message for his people.
