Nicolas Hulot shares with us his expedition on the Yemen highlands, during a journey along the ancient incense route. The extraordinary natural landscapes of the desert contrast with the beautiful Arabic architecture in the far South of the Arabic peninsula near Sanaa, the grand capital of Yemen. The caravan and the nomad communities take us to the discovery of a land and a population shaped by the sand and desert, rich in contrasts, traditions and treasures often unknown to the Western world. An example are the “hommes fleurs”, a nomad population that tries to keep its heritage of traditions intact, such as the young peoples’ initiation into the cult of flowers, which is characterised by a very strong sense of belonging to the community and based on the respect of common values and rules.
