On the back of an old photograph of two young soldiers from Trentino with the uniform of the Hapsburg Empire, there is the address of a photography studio in a small town in southern Austria. Then there is the image of a patriarchal family and children in a schoolroom, all from the same town, all war refugees. This is the start of a journey through the memories of a Trentino family during the First World War, beginning with the search for that photography studio. The story crosses the battlefields of the Marne and Isonzo, to conclude among the rocky crags of the Pasubio at the end of the war, when the survivors return to their valley, only to find a town in ruins and without life.
