On Monte Bettogli, Carrara, men and machines quarry the mountain for marble. The foreman, Il Capo, supervises, coordinates and directs quarrymen and heavy machinery with only signs and gestures. His skin burnt by the sun, Il Capo casts a terrifying, primordial shadow over the blinding white marble as the horizon stretches off into the distance. Conducting his dangerous, yet sublime orchestra, which looks onto the sheer rock-faces and peaks of the Apuan mountains, Il Capo works in a deafening vacuum, one that turns into a paradoxical silence.
