In Trento there is a district with two faces and two different spellings: San Bartolameo/San Bartolomeo. San Bartolameo is understood to be the brand new student hall managed by the Opera Universitaria in Trento. San Bartolomeo instead indicates the oldest part of the district, made up of council housing constructed after the Second World War and commonly called the “palafitte” (pile-dwellings) due to the characteristic pillar structure. Today the palafitte are uninhabited because the authorities have decided to tear them down in order to develop the area. Uncertainty about the future of the district in the words of the former inhabitants of the palafitte comes together with uncertainty about the future expressed by students, arriving in Trento in order to begin constructing a future for themselves, away from their families and old friends.
