In the Contamines-Montjoie valley of France’s Haute Savoie, snowcats have slowly replaced hay-carts. In half a century, the winter tourism industry has transformed the life of the locals. Now that their ‘white-gold mine’ is running dry, there are mixed feelings in the valley and a mild bitterness hangs in the air. How can we explain the invisible force that links people so closely to their homeland? This documentary attempts to do so with the help of a string quartet and an Alpine brass band. Miage is an ecological and musical fairytale that paints a unique portrait of a mountain area undergoing great change.
