A writer in verse and prose, a poet who tells stories of his land but who also offers accurate and heartfelt reports of war in the trenches, the shepherd Francesco Giuliani was born in the mountains of Abruzzo and grew up on the Campo Imperatore plain and the Tavoliere delle Puglie. The small story of a transhumant shepherd on horseback in the last century contains within it the greater history of Italy: the 1915-18 Great War, sheep-farming, crafts linked to wood-working, the popular tradition of oral story-telling. Francesco exalts all these aspects with the magnificent simplicity of the self-taught man who believes in culture more than anything else and who was redeemed by it.
