Early February 2011, the Italian Simone Moro, Kazak Denis Urubko, and American Cory Richards reached the peak of Gasherbrum II, 8,035 metres above sea level. It was the first winter ascent of the mountain and the very first time that any of the five Eight-Thousanders in Pakistan’s Karakorum range had been climbed. The expedition left Italy on 27 December 2010 and had to brave temperatures as low as -50°C, as well as 200 km/h winds, as the team set up its route to the peak. Gasherbrum II was Simone Moro’s third winter ascent of an Eight-Thousander, after Shisha Pangma in 2005 and Makalu in 2009. The team’s experience in the dark, harsh Gasherbrum II winter is captured through the stark, honest lens of the mountaineer, filmmaker and photographer Cory Richards. “Cold” depicts the mountaineers’ fatigue, doubts and fears in their own words, and reveals their terrifying descent during which they risked hypothermia and losing their way.

Anson Fogel has been making films and taking photos since he was a child; he was inspired by godfather’s darkroom and by his family’s love for exciting destinations. He has recently won awards at a string of festivals, as well as critical acclaim for his film “Wildwater”. He has shot film for WireStone, Brother and Company, Microsoft, Razorfish, Justin McClure.tv, and many more; he has also directed web series for Spire USA and Ommerzant. He recently edited the short films “Paraiso” and “Red Landing” for Firefly Films and Gretchen Wroblewski. He is currently working on a film by the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride.
