The sulphur mines are concealed in the poorest and hottest areas of inland Sicily. The video camera of De Seta follows the miners as they set off for the shafts at dawn and wait for their companions on the night shift to come to the surface.
At a certain point the images, filmed at a depth of 500 metres underground, are interrupted to return to the surface, almost as if the director felt a sudden need for air.
