The “Fire of the Sacred Heart of Jesus” is a tradition in Alto Adige dating back to 1796. The traditional bonfires are lit every year in June, after the Feast of Corpus Christi. The custom originated in an initiative by the Abbot of Stams, one of the most prominent local figures of the time, appealing for divine intervention following the news that Napoleon’s troops were marching towards Tyrol from Milan.
