The "mountain of the Italians" is back in the spotlight at the Trento Film Festival with the world premiere of the restoration of a film that has made the history of mountain cinema. The documentary, made from the extraordinary footage shot in 1954 by cameraman and director Mario Fantin, who followed the victorious Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio up to 6560 meters, setting a record for filming at high altitudes, was edited and directed by Marcello Baldi, an experienced documentary filmmaker from the Trentino region (winner ex aequo in 1953 of the Rododendro d'Argento at the 2nd edition of the Trento Film Festival), who added to Fantin's images a counter-song shot in Italy and two voice-overs. The film was shown for the first time on March 25, 1955, in the presence of the head of state, Luigi Einaudi, and was very well received by the audience. The restoration of ITALIA K2 has been carried out by the Cineteca di Bologna, in collaboration with the Centro di Cinematografia and Cineteca del CAI, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture.
