Exactly fifty years after the event, the film retraces the story of the first Italian ascent of Everest, also representing the last of 21 expeditions organised by Guido Monzino. The combined presence of numerous civilians and military personnel demanded meticulous organisation and required an impressive quantity of equipment to support the enterprise, complete with helicopters for providing supplies and rescue missions. The cameraman filming the spectacular footage of the Himalayas was Pietro Magni, who did not turn up his nose at ethnographic documentation, and who handed over the camera to the expert mountaineers reaching the peak in the final phase of the climb. On this occasion, the screening will use a new digitized copy made by Bologna Film Library from reversal film dating back to the era, belonging to the “Monzino Collection” of FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano.
