PIWI WINES: VINES FOR MOUNTAIN AREAS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

In Trentino there is a long tradition of mountain viticulture, not linked to specific vines, but rather adapting over time, while maintaining recognisable characteristics, with forms and varieties cultivated on the basis of the relevant socioeconomic and environmental context.
Climate change in the last few years and progressive restrictions in the use of pesticides are creating major difficulties for all farmers, whether using integrated, organic or biodynamic systems.
The evident climate change trend over the last thirty years and the acceleration in the last twelve months have forced us to ask ourselves questions, presenting us with major challenges for the future.
The recovery of old abandoned terraces once cultivated at medium altitude is one possibility, but which vines should be cultivated?
Cutting edge research, prospects for using new vines resistant to various fungal diseases, drought-resistant rootstock and new crossbreeding technology (AE).
