Sonja Rizovska Jovanovska is born 1969, in Stip, Macedonia. In the school year of 1986/7 she enrolled at the PMFaculty in Skopje, department for ethnology. She graduated in 1993; in the school year of 1994/95 she enrolled for postgraduate studies at the Institut for Sociology on the Faculty for Philosophy in Skopje. She got her Master's Degree on 29.10.1995 and became a Magisterial in Sociological sciences.
She got her Doctor's Degree on 18.12.2003 on the subject “The prohibitions i.e. taboos in the multiethnic and multyreligious rural communities”, and she became a Doctor of Sociological Sciences.
Working engagements and scientific work
In December 1996, D-r. Sonja Rizovska Jovanovska began her work at the Institute for Old Slavonic Culture in Prilep as a junior assistant. On 16.01.2004 she was chosen, for a scientific collaborator and in May 2003 she became a manager of the project: “The role of man and woman in the Christian Orthodox and Muslim tradition”.
During her work at the Institut for Old Slavonic Culture, she was participating in the following scientific research projects:
1. Macedonian folk mythology; (as collaborator)
2. Folk mythology of the Macedonian people; (as collaborator)
3. Jozef Obremski – one of the most distinguished foreign researchers of the Macedonian culture; (as collaborator)
4. Hell and paradise in Macedonian and Albanian culture; (as collaborator)
5. The role of man and woman in the Christian Orthodox and Muslim tradition
(as a project manager)
Review on the scientific and professional activities
During her working engagements at the Institut for Old Slavonic Culture, D-r. Sonja Rizovska Jovanovska, was participating in the preparing of the following publications:
- Prohibitions in multiethnic and multyreligious village communities in the region of Prilep (326 p.)

Now, she is professor of the Univerzity of Tourism and menagmenet– Skopje
Sonja Rizoska Jovanovska has published many articles in foreign and domestic magazines. She has participated on many international symposiums in the country and abroad.Presently she is Director of the Department for ethnology and ethno genesis, at the Institut for Old Slavic Culture in Skopje.
Her first movie, as author and director, is the anthropological film “The Prilep Bear-Men”.
She was member of the jury of The 13th and 14th International Festival of Ethnological Films in Belgrade, Serbia.
On the 15th International Festival of Ethnological Film-Serbia, 01-05. 11.2006
First prize for extraordinary contribution to ethnological film for foreign production for Anthropological film “THE PRILEP BEAR MEN ”(2006), together with Ivo Kuzmanich from Croatia.
In December, 18-th 2006, The Old-Slav Culture Institute Councel promoted Ms. Sonja Rizoska Jovanovska to a senior scientific associate.
