It is the story, narrated by a journalist, of the "Guido Monzino" expedition, led in May and June and July 1959, to the conquest of Kanjut Sar, in the Caracorum range, 7760 meters high, on the summit of which the people of the valleys, distressed by the perpetual need for water, fabled that there exists, inexhaustible and inaccessible, a lake of marvelous beauty.
The journalist's account, which began in Cervinia, falls silent in the finale to give way to the voices, recorded, of the climbers, who document the solitary conquest of the summit, reached on July 19.
