This is a diary of the Monzino expedition to the west coast of Greenland, carried out in July-August 1961.
It included Guido and Franco Monzino ( the producer's cousin, who died in an automobile accident a month after the expedition), Mario Fantin, Jean Biche and other Valtournanche Pession guides, Antoine and Leonardo Carrel, Cerrutelli, Sartelli and Capt. Barberis commander of the "yacht."
It reaches the 74th parallel by plane and then travels along the coast of the island by boat.
At one point the expedition's itinerary undergoes a forced change because via radio the Italians picked up news of a mountaineering misfortune of a Belgian climbing team.
They change course and in a generous contest of human solidarity bring aid to the victims.
Aostan guides recover two of the four victims of the fall.
By now, however, the expedition can be said to be over because the time lost in the highly humanitarian work has precluded any possibility of bringing it to a conclusion.
Out of scruples Monzino and his men push on to Holms Island, on which the famous "devil's finger" stands, and then return to base.
