The story is about a family which lives in the Tasmania's Central Plateau, isolated from the world; the only contact is one neighbour who is hostile and competes with the father in the snaring of animals. The mother Ruby is desperate with her life because her husband was her only hope to get out of the isolation she has experienced on her father's farm, but her hopes have vanished because of the new isolation with her family. One day, when her husband and her son are gone snaring she leaves the farm and makes her way to another valley. The weather gets bad and her only way out of this situation is the horse of the dying neighbour which she takes in order to arrive at her father's farm where she finds her aging and crippled grandmother. When the grandmother dies she tries to get back to her family but a blizzard surprises her. Her husband and her son find her the day after, still alive, and get her back to their highland home.
