The 1915-1918 war on the Dolomite front line has no equal in history. The Italian, Austrian and German armies fought on these mountains in inhuman conditions, withstanding assaults on the walls, defending interminatibly peaks and postings, laying mines for which kilometres of galleries had to be dug in the mountains and spending long exhausting hours in the trenches. In the war on the Dolomites there were some memorable feats, cases of courage, and extraordinary episodes in a conflict which, for both sides, also meant fighting for survival was itself heroic. Here are some of this historic episodes in which the horror of war contrats with the magnificent natural surroundings. The film centres on the small Lagazuoi, a mountain near Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val Parola. Today, the same armies, once enemies, have returned to this place to restore the old fortifications, make crumbling galleries practicable and build together the most incredibile open air museum dedicated to the Great War.
