Five families of Alto Adige farmers take their livestock, as usual, from the place they live in Valle Aurina across the Tauern Mountains to Salzburg. The transhumance occurs in spring and usually by means of transport. Only the Eller family of St. Peter still use the old way of crossing the mountains on foot with their animals. The journey follows the Tauern route across the Krimmler Pass that, even in spring, can still be snow-covered in some places making it necessary to dig a way through. Thus, they leave home, where food reserves are low, and go to the vast meadows and woodlands they own in the Upper Tauern and Zillertal. In autumn they return along a rugged path, which is over 2600 metres in the highest part and always covered in snow. The film is about transhumance and highlights the value of this and other local traditions and describes the daily life and work in the mountain dairies and grazing lands in summer.
