The parallel stories of two men and two women who meet during a journey into the heart of the Buddhist culture of Bhutan, in the Himalayas. Dondup is a young state official, fascinated by the American myth, who dreams of leaving the little kingdom of Bhutan to work in the United states. When he gets the chance to escape from the village where he lives, he misses the bus that would have takem him to the nearby town. He finds himself walking along the road with two other travellers: a Buddhist monk and apple seller. The monk, on hearing that Dondup plans to go to America, warns him against it and tells him the story of Tashi, a lazy boy, fond of witchcraft, who drems of green fields populated with beautiful women. One day Tashi’s brother gives him a magic potion that can take him to the distant mountains and forests he has always longed to see, but not everyhing goes according to plan. On the road to Thimpu, covered nearly all the way on foot, the monk continues his tale, while a number of listening to the monk’s their path. After listening to the monk’s story and meeting the lovely Sonam, the young official’s determination and his plans to flee begin to falter.
