In 1930 Ernst Bloch wrote a piece of criticism titled Alpen ohne Photographie, where he analysed the changes in the perception of landscapes at the beginning of the 20th century. Still pictures become more important than the landscape itself. The mountain tourists do not seem able to interpret the landscape, but are blinded by the stereotypical picture postcards. At the same time the Alps have become so easy to photograph, but so difficult to paint, read and understand.
