Audio recordings made by Nuto Revelli in the 1970s in order to write “Il mondo dei vinti” and “L’anello forte”, interviews with the descendents of those witnesses today and filming of the contemporary landscape in the Province of Cuneo and significant sites in the Turin area and Provence. This is the material giving rise to the three films in the documentary series: Il Lavoro, La Terra, Le Migrazioni.
The stories collected from farm workers recount a world on the frontier. Men and women who left the countryside to contribute to the industrialisation of our country and begin a new life. People who lived through two World Wars and the economic boom.
Now the descendents of those witnesses lack prospects. Industrial development is floundering, while the memory of the peasant culture has been removed.
And yet the witnesses of today could also be said to reflect a frontier culture. Half a century on they are experiencing the unsustainability of development without limitations and are looking for other ecologically viable routes.
The voices recorded by Revelli speak a language which offers new breathing space and can provide unexpected answers to their descendents. The landscapes are the transfigured face of this testimony: the remnants, silences, distances and displacement. From here we can depart once again in order to contribute towards giving a new identity to the “missing people”, today and tomorrow.
