At the age of 40 Manlio abandons teaching to go and work in a mine, however to fully understand himself and this new world he must take on the most infamous role: the timekeeper. Now he is 82 years old. Silvestro has worked in the mine since he was 23. He is the son of a miner, a child of the mine, he has made love to the mountains. Now he is 61 years old. The different but parallel routes of these two men converge in 1992, when they barricade themselves inside the San Giovanni mine for months, mining the entrance with explosive in order to prevent closure and the desertification of the area. Now that the mines have closed and the dreaded desert advances, Manlio and Silvestro try to launch an important message.
