Drogo, a young lieutenant, is assigned to the defense of an isolated fortress in a mountainous desert region. The garrison’s mission is to fight off any attacks by the Tartars. In reality though, the real enemy is time, passing time, sapping their lives and vitality as they wait and wait for Tartars who never show. Italian premiere of the restored masterpiece by Valerio Zurlini, taken from the novel by Dino Buzzati, promoted by the lead actor, Jacques Perrin and presented for the first time in the "Classics" section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

Valerio Zurlini

A director and screenwriter, he was born in Bologna in 1926 and died in Verona in 1982. The creator of “silent” film, focusing on the psychology of the characters and respectful of history, he was one of the most important and lesser known directors of his generation. After having won the Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbon) for the screenplay of Guendalina (1957), directed by Lattuada, the culmination of his career came with the David di Donatello Award and the Nastro d'Argento for the direction of “Il deserto dei Tartari”(1976).
