“India, matri bhumi means the humus of the earth. It is a film that I really love, because as I have said, it is here that I have tried to make an attempt at renewal in the field of knowledge and information: information that is not strictly speaking scientific or statistical but that also offers a certain documentation of emotions and the way that people behave.” Roberto Rossellini
The restoration was carried out by the Cineteca in Bologna at the laboratory L’Immagine Ritrovata in 2011.

Director

Roberto Rossellini

Roberto Rossellini (Rome 1906-1977) was one of the greatest masters of contemporary film. His use of the cinematographic language as a tool for knowledge was translated into a direct, participatory approach without formalism. He began directing feature films by collaborating with F. De Robertis on La nave bianca (1941), then directing war films (Un pilota ritorna, 1942; L'uomo della croce, 1943). With Roma città aperta (1945) he imposed Italian neorealism as a new form of cinematographic narration. This was followed by Paisà (1946) and Germania, anno zero (1947). After Amore (1948) and La macchina ammazza-cattivi (1948-49), he directed Stromboli, terra di Dio (1950), Europa '51 (1951), Viaggio in Italia (1954), Paura (1955), interpreted by Ingrid Bergman, and subsequently India (1958), Il generale della Rovere (1959), Era notte a Roma (1960), Viva l'Italia (1961), Vanina Vanini (1961), Anima nera (1962) and Il messia (1975).
